I went to the UN farmers' market on Sunday in Shibuya and it was fantastic! Anyone living in Tokyo who hasn't been to this fun-fare is missing out on so much. It was busy with sellers of everything from natto to sake, much of it organic. I also went to check out the Nippori Marche which is much smaller and cozy, and more opportunities to talk to the people who are selling goods from all over Japan. Thanks Popcorn for introducing these events!

I *so* want to do a bit of a green curtain in my new backyard, but this year is a bit of a write-off because our deck is falling off the house and covered in building material for our inside renos! But I'm bookmarking this page and will use it next year. For sure!

Thank you for all the links!!! We used to have a green curtain in Ghana right outside our kitchen window (we would eat breakfast in the kitchen and the sun shone directly in on us)- the green curtain was exactly that- a curtain of greenery to keep the sunlight out.
First a skeleton of thin fishing line was strung from roof out towards the ground- then the growing began- and it grew fast and furiously- creating a most wonderful green curtain!

Christina, You should keep an eye out for them, but as Kevin mentions above, you might want to check to see if they mats are pre-treated with any chemicals. Another person I interviewed for an article said he and his wife chose their mats based on the fact that the igusa grower didn't use a chemical known to be harmful to pollinators.

As to your question if it would be too heavy for your seeds, my hunch is that yes, it would be. I use old plastic grocery bags to make a quick and dirty greenhouse for sprouting, although a glass bowl would also work. You just need to keep them cozy until they sprout.

Kate, I totally understand! But you know, you might want to look into what native species grow in your area and work from there. Why make more work for yourself if you could have a beautiful prairie or other cool planting? Seriously, it will be less work, benefit pollinators, save water and energy, and look awesome!
